How SEL Shapes a Supportive School Community

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is key to helping kids manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions. It promotes personal growth and contributes to healthier communities, helping kids thrive and setting them up for success. Here’s how SEL benefits children:

  • Mental Health: Helps kids manage stress, regulate emotions, and build resilience.
  • Academic Success: Improves focus, engagement, and motivation, leading to better school performance.
  • Healthy Relationships: Fosters empathy and conflict resolution for stronger connections with others.
  • Decision-Making: Encourages thoughtful, ethical choices.
  • Social Inclusion: Promotes respect for diversity and reduces bullying.

Building SEL Skills at Brier Elementary

Brier Elementary prioritizes SEL through various activities led by our counselor, Mrs. Sara, and our dedicated teachers. Here are some ways BRE supports this important curriculum:

  • Classroom Lessons: Teachers incorporate lessons on emotions, problem-solving, bullying prevention, and friendship-building.
  • Small Group Sessions: Focused groups teach specific skills, such as social interaction and friendship-building.
  • One-on-One Counseling: Mrs. Sara offers short-term, personalized counseling to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in school.
  • Classroom Tools: Each classroom is equipped with resources like "Take a Break" areas, fidgets, and sensory items to support emotional regulation.
  • School-Wide SEL Integration: SEL topics are woven into daily routines and academic lessons, such as analyzing a character's emotions in a book.

Together, these strategies create a nurturing environment where SEL is embedded into every aspect of school life, helping students grow emotionally and socially.
